At GSP 5, the decided to hold an addtional meeting to finalize the report. The Panel's inputs are expected to feed into inter-governmental processes, including preparations for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), and the annual meetings of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The event is organized 20 years after the first pan-Mediterranean conference on wetlands, which was held in 1991 in the town of Grado, Italy, and which adopted the goal to "stop and reverse the loss and degradation of Mediterranean wetlands." This new International Symposium aims to review the current situation of water and wetlands in the Mediterranean, assess the new challenges and plan for the next 20 years. Important objectives are to assess the changes occurring in the Mediterranean and their potential impact on wetlands, to identify ways in which wetland resources can be used sustainably with a strong emphasis on water resources and to provide ways for closer cooperation between experts and actors in the Mediterranean involved in the water area, wetlands and other related sectors.

Two pesticides, dicofol and trichlorfon are also on the agenda of this year’s meeting. In line with the process for collecting information on ongoing international trade adopted by the Chemical Review Committee at its first meeting, countries and other interested parties are invited to submit information on ongoing trade and use of the above-listed chemicals.

The Academy is intended to facilitate exchange of best practices, promote interaction with experts and develop collaborative partnerships for long-term, sustainable solutions and approaches on all policy-related areas related to e-waste, from policy to technology to economics to social aspects, taking into account regional disparities. The organizers hope to duplicate the E-waste Academy approach in other regions.
